What to look for when head lice is going around

When head lice is going around in school, the school sends a letter or email to the parents so that parents can check their children's hair. Parents will check their kids' hair for lice but most parents don't really know what they are looking for. When examining your child's hair for head lice, you need to look for the nits (eggs) not the actual bug. The nits are cemented to the hair shaft. You will not find nits on the scalp of your child's head. The reason for why you will not be looking the bug itself is because when you open the hair, the head lice will move away from the light. Head lice move very fast going from hair to hair in half of a second. The nits are cemented to the hair shaft and they do not move. The nits are not white, they go from light brown to dark brown. If you are confused, and cannot distinguish lice from dandruff, all you have to do is try to move what is found on the head. If it moves and it flakes away, it is dandruff. If it doesn't move and feels like a tiny pebble, then you have found a nit. When checking your child's head for lice, check very thoroughly for about 15 minutes, if you don't find anything, check again in a week just in case that your child has an early infestation. When the nits are first laid, they are translucent and are very hard to see.

Free Lice screenings are always helpful!   As we approached our March Free Screening day, I was very impressed at the steps parents are now taking to prevent head lice. It is very important that every school aged child is checked for head lice on (at least) a monthly basis. We had previous clients bringing in their friends and new families who booked appointments on our free lice screening day. We were busy with parents trying to be on top of the head lice outbreaks in their schools and community. Through the years of helping families with getting rid of head lice at Hair Fairies the Head Lice Helpers I've come across many endearing and recurring quotes from our clients such as: "When I grow up I want to be a hair fairy." "I bet you always have a LOUSY day." "All Hair Fairies should have a bar & a psychologist." And one of my favorites "Have a LICE day", but it wasn't until today that I heard this unique quote "Walking into Hair Fairies is like walking into heaven." I must say that I enjoy working at Hair Fairies very much but I hope that when I get to experience heaven it doesn't include head lice and I hope it definitely doesn't include the lovely scents of eucalyptus and tea tree!. 🙂

The ongoing head lice

I got a phone call from a client saying that her daughter had gotten lice three times.  Each time her mom treated it the head lice came right back. She told me that she had treated her the night before and that when she took her daughter to school that day the school nurse found a louse on the child. I asked what lice treatment was she using to try to get rid of the head lice in her daughter's hair. She then tells me "I shampooed my daughter's hair with the Rid shampoo and then I combed her out." I told her about our services and why our lice treatment products at Hair Fairies are all natural and 100% effective.  And that unfortunately many lice products on the market have not been effective for a long time and are highly toxic.  She tells me she is going to jump in a cab and head to our salon. Donate Lice Free Hair At the Hair Fairies Lice Treatment Salon in Chicago we had a client with super long hair…about 10 feet long. She was a pre-teen and has never had a haircut in her life! When mom received the call from school that her daughter was found with Head Lice she was frantic. She brought her to Hair Fairies right away. After all her treatments were completed and every person in the household was screened for head lice by Hair Fairies, mom felt a lot better. She said “This would have taken me months to get rid of with that hair! I am so glad you guys exist.”   2 weeks later…they came back for their Guarantee lice checks. Again nothing was found.   Head Lice in Denial It is sometimes very difficult to detect head lice. In Chicago, we recently did a Free Lice screening for a school in need. They have had many Lice cases reported and they needed help identifying who indeed had Lice and consequently inform the parents. Our professionally trained lice removal technicians screened all students and teachers. We gave free educational materials on Head Lice along with Educational Parent letters on how to deal with this pesky parasite. The next day we had a parent come in to our salon with a Hair Fairies parent letter. At the school screening, our technician taped the child’s nit attached to the hair shaft (that was found at the Lice screening) to the Parent Letter. The parent was confused as to what this was. To her understanding, she always believed nits (eggs) were white in color. But actually nits are always a shade of brown once placed on a white back drop…and always the same shape and size. Once we showed her samples of other nits and bugs she started second guessing herself. She also thought Head Lice jump and fly. After seeing our samples she also understood how they do not have back legs to jump or wings to fly.                                                                                                                                      The The mom was so dumbfounded at this NEW information she said she was going to get a second opinion and will continue to check her daughter. We wished her the beast of luck and we even gave her a free screening card. She can come in to the salon and our trained professionals can not only get rid of head lice but also help identify Head Lice. Identifying head lice is half the battle. Not only do we educate and treat clients on head lice, but we also provide a great array of entertainment for them. Today at our head lice removal salon in Los Angeles we had one of our little clients ask for a movie. Sylvia our assistant manager handed her our movie list. As she read through our long list of choices she came across the tiltle of "The Never Ending Story". She pauses and puts the list down and turns to ask Sylvia "Is it called The Never Ending Story because it's never ending, just like lice?" To this Sylvia replied "I don't know why it's the never ending story, but here at Hair Fairies we guarantee you will not have never ending lice."
